Our NPR in Action highlight for November is Fred Barnhouse from Mercy Medical Center Dialysis – Mercy Plaza in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During our November Connection Call Fred shared that he has written a letter for new hemodialysis patients that has been included in the clinic’s welcome packet.
The letter was written from Fred’s perspective, as an experienced hemodialysis patient, to someone new to the process explaining what to expect at the clinic. In the letter he also encourages new patients to be the leader in their own care by asking questions and getting guidance from clinic staff. He also shares the Network 12’s My Kidney Kit as a tool to get more information to help them on their journey with kidney disease.
In the future, he hopes to write the same thing for peritoneal dialysis patients. This is a great example of how a NPR can partner with their clinic to improve the patient experience.
Thank you for sharing Fred, and keep up the great work!
